The Venieris Mansion Ano Mera Mykonos

The unique mansion situated in Ano Mera Mykonos, 2 km from the sea, has been
built by 19th century construction contractor Dimitris Venieris, a long time
collaborator of the famous Saxon (naturalized Greek) architect Ernst Ziller
author of a number of neo-classical building still preserved in the center of
Athens. Building the Ano Mera dwelling along the same line as a series of
constructions Venieris authored in Athens based on Queen Olga designs,
commenced and concluded in the last decade of the 19th century. Being
conceived as the summer twin house to the main house of the Venieris family in
the heart of Mykonos Hora, it was (and still is) termed as “the Tower” by Ano
Mera peasants often alienated by the appearance of the building and the west
oriented lifestyle of its early inhabitants. The Ano Mera mansion still carries
remnants of the glorious past, with very few interventions (the most recent one
dates back from the early 60’s) and has inscribed in the fading colors of the
walls, the drawings on the ceilings, the old pieces of furniture and the original
built kitchen in the basement the history of both the Venieris family and the
island of Mykonos, a standing witness of time floating through the decades
spanning along three centuries overwhelmed by tides of changes.
